Which Atlas Models This Applies To

Atlas produced three main residential lines that remain serviceable in Oakland: the Series 100 vinyl single-hung, the Series 300 aluminum-clad wood double-hung, and the Series 500 fiberglass casement. The Series 300 is the one we encounter most in the East Bay hills, where the marine layer cycling against afternoon heat stresses the cladding seal. To identify your unit, open the sash and look for a stamped metal tag on the top of the frame or a printed label inside the jamb; the series number and manufacturing date code are there. If the tag is gone, measure the frame depth: Series 100 is 2-5/8 inch, Series 300 is 3-1/4 inch, Series 500 is 3-1/2 inch.

For Atlas specifically, we generally source OEM weatherstrip, balances, and multipoint hardware because the channel dimensions are proprietary. Sashes and frames can often be matched with quality aftermarket equivalents from Kensington or Sierra Pacific, though color matching the exterior cladding on Series 300 units requires a factory-ordered component. The gotcha: Atlas changed its balance shoe design in 2008, and pre-2008 Series 100 units need a different coil balance assembly than post-2008, even with the same window dimensions. We verify this on site before ordering.

Signs Your Atlas Windows & Doors Is Failing

• Sash drops or won’t stay open. The coil balance or block-and-tackle assembly has lost tension. In Atlas Series 100 and 300 units, this is the most common call we get in Oakland, where salt air near the bay accelerates corrosion in the balance housing.
• Draft around the frame even when closed. The compression weatherstrip has hardened or the pile seal along the sash edge has flattened. Atlas used a specific bulb-style seal in the 1990s that is no longer manufactured; we retrofit with a compatible profile that seals better than the original.
• Condensation between glass panes. The insulated glass unit (IGU) seal has failed, allowing moisture into the air gap. This is not repairable; the IGU must be replaced. In Oakland’s mild climate, we see this most often on south-facing units where daily thermal cycling is highest.
• Multipoint lock won’t engage or feels loose. The locking points have shifted out of alignment, or the gearbox in the handle set has stripped. Atlas used two different gearbox suppliers; we bring both to the first visit because the difference is not visible until disassembly.
• Frame corner separation or cladding buckling. Water has infiltrated the joint, swelling the wood substrate in Series 300 units. This is structural; the sash or frame needs replacement before rot spreads to the rough opening.
