What goes wrong in DIY: relaying pavers without regrading the base, which guarantees the same failure in one wet season; using play sand or mason sand instead of ASTM C33 coarse concrete sand, which washes out; and skipping the plate compactor on the base and bedding layers, which PGT’s installation manual requires in two passes. The compactor rental is $90, but the 200-pound machine on a slope is where homeowners get hurt or under-compact.
