Atlas Windows & Doors: The Oakland Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Atlas-compatible windows and doors across Oakland, with most replacement parts available same-day and full unit installs typically quoted between $4,500 and $15,000 depending on the series and opening count. Atlas units are common in Oakland homes built between 1995 and 2015, especially in the Rockridge and Montclair areas where we see the aluminum-clad wood series aging into their third decade. Most owners discover a problem when the sash won’t stay open, the multipoint lock won’t engage, or they feel a draft that wasn’t there last winter.
Which Atlas Models This Applies To
Atlas produced three main residential lines that remain serviceable in Oakland: the Series 100 vinyl single-hung, the Series 300 aluminum-clad wood double-hung, and the Series 500 fiberglass casement. The Series 300 is the one we encounter most in the East Bay hills, where the marine layer cycling against afternoon heat stresses the cladding seal. To identify your unit, open the sash and look for a stamped metal tag on the top of the frame or a printed label inside the jamb; the series number and manufacturing date code are there. If the tag is gone, measure the frame depth: Series 100 is 2-5/8 inch, Series 300 is 3-1/4 inch, Series 500 is 3-1/2 inch.
For Atlas specifically, we generally source OEM weatherstrip, balances, and multipoint hardware because the channel dimensions are proprietary. Sashes and frames can often be matched with quality aftermarket equivalents from Kensington or Sierra Pacific, though color matching the exterior cladding on Series 300 units requires a factory-ordered component. The gotcha: Atlas changed its balance shoe design in 2008, and pre-2008 Series 100 units need a different coil balance assembly than post-2008, even with the same window dimensions. We verify this on site before ordering.
Signs Your Atlas Windows & Doors Is Failing

- Sash drops or won’t stay open. The coil balance or block-and-tackle assembly has lost tension. In Atlas Series 100 and 300 units, this is the most common call we get in Oakland, where salt air near the bay accelerates corrosion in the balance housing.
- Draft around the frame even when closed. The compression weatherstrip has hardened or the pile seal along the sash edge has flattened. Atlas used a specific bulb-style seal in the 1990s that is no longer manufactured; we retrofit with a compatible profile that seals better than the original.
- Condensation between glass panes. The insulated glass unit (IGU) seal has failed, allowing moisture into the air gap. This is not repairable; the IGU must be replaced. In Oakland’s mild climate, we see this most often on south-facing units where daily thermal cycling is highest.
- Multipoint lock won’t engage or feels loose. The locking points have shifted out of alignment, or the gearbox in the handle set has stripped. Atlas used two different gearbox suppliers; we bring both to the first visit because the difference is not visible until disassembly.
- Frame corner separation or cladding buckling. Water has infiltrated the joint, swelling the wood substrate in Series 300 units. This is structural; the sash or frame needs replacement before rot spreads to the rough opening.

DIY or Call Us?

There is one thing an Atlas owner can safely check: verify the lock is fully disengaged before forcing a stuck sash, because a locked sash with a failed balance feels like a jammed track and people break the lift handle trying to muscle it. Beyond that, window and door work involves working at height, handling heavy glass units, and diagnosing interdependent systems where the symptom and the cause are in different places.
The specific risk with Atlas Series 300 units: the aluminum cladding is thin and deforms easily if pried incorrectly, exposing the wood beneath to moisture and voiding any remaining weather resistance. We have replaced sashes that a homeowner damaged with a putty knife trying to access the balance. Call (628) 300-4376 and we will quote the repair in writing before any work starts.
FAQs
Vinyl Series 100 units typically reach 20-25 years in Oakland’s climate, while Series 300 aluminum-clad wood can exceed 30 years if the cladding seal is maintained. The marine layer in areas like Alameda and the Oakland waterfront accelerates hardware corrosion, so balances and locks often need attention before the frame itself fails. Call (628) 300-4376 for an exact quote on your unit - estimates are free.
A failed IGU seal cannot be repaired; the glass unit must be replaced. Surface scratches or minor chips in the glass can sometimes be polished, but this is cosmetic and does not address seal failure. We stock standard IGU sizes for Atlas Series 100 and 300 and can measure for custom sizes on the first visit. Call (628) 300-4376 for an exact quote - estimates are free.
Balance, lock, or weatherstrip replacement is usually completed in 1-2 hours per window. IGU or sash replacement takes 2-3 hours including removal, installation, and trim reinstatement. Full-unit replacement in an existing opening is a half-day per window. We bring parts for common Atlas failures on the first visit, so most jobs are same-day completion. Call (628) 300-4376 to schedule.
We carry balances, lock gearboxes, weatherstrip profiles, and standard IGU sizes compatible with Atlas Series 100 and 300 on every Oakland service vehicle. Series 500 fiberglass components and factory-color cladding pieces are ordered with a 5-7 day lead time. We verify what is needed before dispatch so we do not waste a trip.
